Tree Crown Thinning Tustin

Tree crown thinning--also called a tree crown reduction--is the process of pruning a tree in order to decrease the size of its canopy.

Ends of branches will evenly be removed throughout the tree, reducing a percentage of the overall size and height, but leaving the tree balanced. The entire service is performed with the height and width of the branches extending from the tree being taken into account, resulting in a well-maintained shape.

During a tree crowning service, smaller (tertiary) branches typically found at the outer edges of the tree are removed. When these branches are selectively removed, the result is a more uniform appearance of the tree's structure.

Before a tree crown reduction, the crown is measured carefully. It's not as simple as just removing small branches--a lot  of care is taken to make sure that the overall aesthetic and integrity of the tree is maintained. Aside from that, there are many other benefits to a tree crown reduction that won't be realized if the service isn't performed in a well-planned, calculated manner.

Considering this, a tree crown reduction isn't something that should be attempted by an experienced tree service provider, let alone a homeowner or a property manager. In fact, many novice tree  services perform tree topping, which is an unacceptable practice for any professional tree  care service.

Advantages of Tree Crown Reduction

There are many different reasons why a tree crown thinning (or tree crown reduction service) might be beneficial for your tree(s):

More Natural Appearance

You might be wondering, "how could you make nature look more natural?""

We have to remember that these natural wonders are often growing in unnatural situations, around roads, neighborhoods and shopping centers. There are ample opportunities for trees to exhibit signs of unnatural growth. Crown thinning gives trees that beautiful, even appearance that is so pleasing to the eye.

Delay Tree Pruning Service

Tree pruning services won't be needed for quite some time after a crown thinning service is performed. You can think of it as a more intense type of pruning.

Minimizes Stress to Tree

Trees with overgrown branches have a difficult time bearing the weight of them eventually. Tree crown thinning helps to "lighten the load" a bit, which helps them to continue to grow stronger.

Encourages Growth

Unhealthy branches take away space and much needed nutrients from the rest of the tree. When excess growth that isn't positively contributing to the health and beauty  of the tree is removed, new growth has the room to grow, and the essential food that it needs to do so.

Tree Crown Thinning FAQs

  • Will my tree be smaller after a tree crown thinning service

This is a common misconception. The overall size and shape of a tree is not necessarily affected. During a tree crown reduction, most of the growth  that is removed are smaller (tertiary) branches, not the large ones that have the biggest impact on the overall shape of the tree.

  • What is the difference between a tree crown reduction and tree topping?

When you see a tree where all of the branches have been cut down to nubs, you're looking at a tree that has been topped. This is not an acceptable practice according  to many arborists, including the Timberr Tree Care Company. Topping is a crude pruning strategy where all of the major branches are cut with blunt ends. Not only are topped trees unsightly, but it the practice has severe consequences  for the structural integrity of a tree. Tree crown thinning, on the other hand, is a completely acceptable and beneficial service which helps with the overall appearance and health of a tree.
